TUISLAND ’n stillewe

...... 35 years later I offer ‘TUISLAND, ’n Stillewe’. In so doing, I pay respects and homage through this body of work to two significant South African photographers, Paul Alberts & David Goldblatt who went out beyond the marginalized line of a once divided country to discover, record and interpret a new way of storytelling through the photographic image. An entire generation has passed since their celebrated works came to light and here now something new has emerged. Two elements in this body of work sew a golden thread connecting these two generations. First is the method of analogue film photography. The entire process for each image in this book from capturing the image, to developing the negatives to hand printing each negative in a darkroom is exactly how it was done during the pre-digital age. The meditation & method to capture and print is the twine that makes each image a work of art. The second aspect which bridges this work with our history is the privilege and recognition this collection has received from Antjie Krog herself. Beloved of her peers, respected of a generation that overcame huge odds, her foreword and deep insight is a testimony to her legacy as an author and poet.
