Inanda Heritage Collection

Whilst those around Willman emigrated and sought refuge away from a fast-changing South Africa, Willman chose instead to pack his bags and over the winter of 2001 he began to photograph what today is the Inanda Heritage route. Spread over 60 km from the city of Pietermaritzburg to the mouth of the Umgeni river into the Indian Ocean, the Inanda valley tells the story of rural communities forging lives, creating history and building one of Africa’s largest multicultural communities. It was this collection that became Willman’s very first serious body of work that launched his career as a photographer. Willman has never followed trends but has doggedly, though out his career, followed his own desire to capture people and places that interested him and where he sought to create value as a photographer.
