Great Zimbabwe Ruins
As a child I ran through these ancient ruins oblivious to its legacy and incredible history. A relic from a time so ancient that historians today still baffle at its true meaning and impact upon Southern Africa.
35 years later at the height of one of Zimbabwe’s driest seasons I returned to these great ruins. For weeks bellowing grey clouds passed overhead teasing the now parched and arid lands.
As I moved silently alone through these majestic ruins capturing images I noticed how my shutter speed kept dropping. As I rewound the shutter advance lever on my medium format Mamiya RB 67 having captured the centre piece of the Great Ruins of Zimbabwe dark circles appeared around me covering the chiselled rocks. Finally, the first drops of rain were falling to the earth. Within moments standing within the inner sanctum of these revered ruins the heavens opened, and the clouds wept upon the lands.
